Riverside Illinois cops: Wisconsin Negro's Illinois casino trip ends with open bottles, DUI charge
According to a news release from the Riverside Police Department, Edward C. Bartlett, 26, of Madison, was charged with DUI alcohol, DUI drugs (marijuana), speeding in a school zone, having no vehicle insurance, improper lane usage and possession of open alcohol by a driver.
A Riverside police officer assigned to patrol at Hauser Central School, 65 Woodside Road, clocked Bartlett's Cadillac Escalade going 43 mph in a 20-mph school zone about 8:30 a.m., police said.
The vehicle was pulled over in the first block of Forest Avenue. The officer "smelled a strong odor of alcohol beverage" on Bartlett's breath and observed an open half-empty bottle of wine next to Bartlett, police said. The officer also smelled marijuana inside the vehicle. Bartlett failed a field sobriety test and was taken into custody, police said. While preparing to tow the Escalade, police found three more open bottles of wine and open bottles of tequila and vodka, according to the release.
Bartlett refused breath and urine tests at the police station but admitted he smoked marijuana before getting into his vehicle earlier in the morning, according to the release. He told police he was trying to get home to Madison, which is about 120 miles northwest of Des Plaines. Riverside is about 17 miles south of Des Plaines.
