A Philadelphia police officer was ambushed as he sat in his marked police cruiser, shot multiple times at point blank range Thursday night, authorities said.

Officer Jessie Hartnett is in stable condition at a hospital, police say. The suspect fired a total of 13 shots, according to Police Commissioner Richard Ross. At least three bullets struck the officer in his left arm.

Hartnett returned fire, hitting his attacker at least three times, Ross added.
